Maskable icons can be any size, and you can continue to use the same sizes that you’d use for normal transparent icons. It’s platform agnostic, so Windows could use them for tiles or iOS could use them for icons. Maskable icons allow web developers to specify a full-bleed icon that will be cropped. Sometimes it would be black or some other darker background. If you didn't add a background to a transparent icon, Android would still add one. The second one is when the Maskable property is set. The first image illustrates what the icon looks like on an Android device if the Maskable property is not added in the Manifest file. Non-maskable icons on Android are centred within the circular mask and given a white backdrop, which may clash with your icon. Masking-incompatible icons may seem cropped or smaller than planned. To look nicely integrated with operating systems that use masks, your PWA app icon should support masking. What's the problem if Android icons are not maskable? To deal with the variety of requirements from manufacturers and devices, Android introduced “adaptive icons.” You supply an image with extra space around the edges, and Android will crop it to the correct shape. Some manufacturers even wanted different shapes. However, manufacturers, like Samsung, wanted to make all icons on a device the same shape to keep things consistent. More about Maskable icons here: What are maskable and adaptive icons? To handle this, browser vendors have introduced Maskable icons. And some of them use circle icons, some use square ones, some with round borders, etc. Since Android is an open-source project, many vendors have their own version. On a specific home screen, each app's icon is the same size and form. App icons, however, have become more uniform in the most recent Android releases. On Android, until a few years ago, developers were allowed to use app icons with a transparent background. All of your app icons, including PWAs, have a solid backdrop on your iPhone and iPad. Transparent backdrop app icons have never been supported by iOS. But not on Mobile - it must have an opaque background there. When installed on Desktop, a Progressive Web App (PWA) can have a transparent background app icon.
